Retiring from CSU before 65: three ways to cover healthcare until Medicare
TESTBy Daniel Okafor, CFP® · Founder & Lead Planner ·
Retirees who leave CSU before 65 usually cover healthcare one of three ways: a retiree health plan available through PERA, coverage through a spouse's employer, or a marketplace plan where premium credits depend on your taxable income. The cheapest route is often the one that fits your income plan, not the one with the lowest sticker price.
Route one: retiree coverage through PERA
PERA offers health plan options to eligible retirees, with a subsidy that depends on service. Premiums are paid from the benefit, which makes the accounting simple. Compare the plan design against your current coverage before assuming it is equivalent.
Route two: a spouse's plan
If your spouse is still working, their employer plan may be the least expensive bridge. The cost is often invisible because it comes out of their paycheck, so put it in the retirement budget explicitly.
Route three: the marketplace, where income is the price
Marketplace premiums are reduced by credits that depend on household taxable income. That connects healthcare directly to the withdrawal sequence in the previous post: a year of large pre-tax withdrawals can raise premiums; a year of drawing from taxable savings can lower them. This is the most common place where an income plan and a healthcare plan are made separately and collide.
The sabbatical and the timing
Faculty sometimes retire at the end of a sabbatical or a contract year. The month you leave affects when employer coverage ends and when the bridge begins. We put the coverage end date on the same calendar as the PERA effective date and the first withdrawal.
